AI search vs. traditional SEO: what Michigan businesses need to know

Updated July 28, 20267 min read

The Short Answer

Traditional SEO gets you ranked in a list of Google results; AI search optimization gets you named in the answer itself, whether that is ChatGPT, a Google AI Overview, or Gemini. The two overlap heavily: roughly 94 percent of Google AI Overview citations come from page-one organic results, so strong SEO remains the entry ticket. What is genuinely new is the Bing side, since ChatGPT retrieves through Bing, plus a heavier weighting of schema, direct-answer formatting, and listing consistency. Do SEO first, then add AI search work as an extension, not a replacement.

01

The core difference: a list versus an answer

Traditional search gives your customer ten blue links and lets them choose. AI search reads a handful of sources and makes the choice for them: it names two or three businesses in a sentence. That changes what winning looks like. In classic SEO, position three on page one is a solid outcome. In an AI answer, you are either one of the names or you do not exist for that customer.

The retrieval paths differ too, and this is where most businesses have a blind spot. Google AI Overviews pull overwhelmingly from pages that already rank on page one of ordinary Google results, about 94 percent of citations. ChatGPT search retrieves through Bing instead, with roughly 87 percent of its citations matching the Bing top ten. A site that ranks well on Google but was never set up in Bing Webmaster Tools can be strong in one system and invisible in the other, and most Michigan business sites are exactly that.

What carries over from SEO

The good news: if you have done real SEO, most of that investment feeds AI visibility directly. The systems reward the same fundamentals.

  • Page-one Google rankings: still the main feeder for Google AI Overviews.
  • Genuinely useful content on real topics: AI systems quote substance, not thin keyword pages.
  • A complete, active Google Business Profile: still the backbone of local visibility in both worlds.
  • Reviews: star ratings and, increasingly, the written text of reviews feed AI recommendations.
  • Site health basics: fast pages, clean structure, crawlable content. A site Google cannot crawl, Bing cannot crawl either.

What is genuinely new

AI search adds a layer of work that classic SEO checklists never included. None of it is exotic, but all of it is specific.

One more shift worth knowing: ChatGPT leans heavily on Reddit and Wikipedia in its US citations. You cannot buy your way into either, and trying to spam them backfires, but it explains why AI answers sometimes cite a five-year-old forum thread over a polished website. The practical takeaway is that third-party sources talking about you matter more than they did, which loops back to reviews and listings.

  • Bing indexing and IndexNow: the entire ChatGPT retrieval path runs through infrastructure most local sites never touched.
  • Schema markup and FAQ formatting: pages with structured data and question-and-answer sections get cited substantially more.
  • Answer-first writing: the literal question as the heading, the direct answer in the first sentences, numbers a system can quote.
  • Listing consistency beyond Google: Yelp (whose review data ChatGPT licenses as of 2026) and Bing Places now matter alongside your Google Business Profile.
  • Measurement by asking: there is no rank tracker for ChatGPT. You measure by asking the assistants your money questions monthly and logging the answers with dates.

How to budget: SEO first, AI search as the extension

Our honest recommendation, even though we sell AI search optimization: if your site does not rank anywhere on Google, fix that first. Since AI Overviews feed off page-one results, SEO is the prerequisite, not the alternative. Skipping SEO to chase AI visibility is building the second floor before the first.

Once the SEO foundation exists, the AI search layer is a modest extension, not a second full engagement: Bing setup, schema, answer formatting on your key pages, listing cleanup, and a monthly logged visibility check. The reason to do it now rather than later is the math on the traffic: AI referrals convert at roughly 4 to 5 times the rate of ordinary search visitors, because the recommendation happened before the click. And local AI answers are still volatile in 2026, which means they are still cheap to win. That window will not stay open.
